DayPrivate / Roam apps
Roam Research, and every other Roam
Seven Roam apps share one name. Here is which one you were looking for.
Search roam apps and the results mix things that have nothing in common: a travel friends app, a travel diary, a bus operators' app, a US Customs app for boaters, a GPS map, and Roam Research, the networked notes app, while a seventh Roam, a virtual office for teams, ranks for its own name. DayPrivate wrote this page because Roam Research sits next to it on planning searches. It is a map of the Roam apps, with Roam Research's own apps for each device set out in full, and DayPrivate kept clearly to one side.
The short answer
If you mean Roam Research, the note taking tool by Roam Research, Inc, it runs in a browser at roamresearch.com, as a desktop app for Mac, Windows and Linux, as Roam Mobile on iPhone and iPad, and as Roam Research on Android. The downloads are free, but Roam Research itself costs $15 a month or $165 a year, with a 31 day trial and no free tier. If you mean reporting a boat's arrival in the US, that is CBP ROAM, a free app from US Customs and Border Protection. If you mean the virtual office for teams, that is Roam at ro.am. DayPrivate is none of these: it is a separate outliner with a day planner attached, $8 a month or $69 a year, for Mac, iPad and iPhone, and it is not released yet.
If you meant roaming, as in using your phone's data abroad, this DayPrivate page cannot help. That is a question for your carrier or an eSIM provider, not a Roam app.
Which Roam is which
Every Roam app on this search, who makes it, and what it is for.
DayPrivate read each Roam app's own store listing or site on 7 October 2026. Only one of them, Roam Research, is a notes app, and only that one overlaps with what DayPrivate does.
| Roam app | Made by | What it does | Price as listed |
|---|---|---|---|
| Roam Research | Roam Research, Inc | "A note taking tool for networked thought." Daily notes, nested bullets, links and backlinks. Web, desktop, iPhone, iPad and Android. | $15 a month, no free tier |
| Roam, the virtual office | ro.am | A virtual workspace for teams. Its support page says "Roam offers apps for Mac, Windows, iOS, Android, and Linux." | Not checked for this page |
| CBP ROAM | US Customs and Border Protection | Lets "pleasure boaters and other eligible travelers who arrive at remote locations report their arrival online." Formerly OARS. iPhone, iPad and Apple silicon Macs. | Free |
| ROAM by onXmaps | onXmaps | Offline GPS maps for hiking, biking and ski routes. The GearJunkie result on this search is a sponsored launch post from June 2016. | $10 a year at launch in 2016 |
| Roam Quill | B-Commerce | "A private travel diary" kept one city at a time on Android. "No accounts, no syncing, no location tracking." | Free, "No paid features" |
| ROAM: Bus Partners | Koushiki Software | An Android app for bus owners, drivers and conductors to manage their service. | Free download |
| Roam: Find Travel Friends | Not shown | Still ranks second for this search, but its App Store page returned not found on 7 October 2026. | Unavailable |
The onXmaps row comes from a 2016 article, so check the store for today's ROAM price before you rely on it. If none of these Roam apps is the one you meant, and you came here for planning rather than travel, DayPrivate's map of the four kinds of day planner app is a better place to start.
Roam Research, device by device
The Roam Research apps for web, Mac, Windows, Linux, iPhone, iPad and Android.
Roam Research is one account with several apps on top of it. Roam Research's public help pages say to install the mobile app, "Sign in with your Roam account and your graphs will be there." Here is each Roam Research app, as its own listing described it when DayPrivate checked.
| Device | Roam Research app | Where to get it | What the listing shows |
|---|---|---|---|
| Any browser | The web app | roamresearch.com | The original Roam Research, signed in with the same account as the apps below. |
| Mac, Windows, Linux | Roam desktop app | The download button on roamresearch.com | Roam's help pages describe "a standalone version of Roam with its own windows and roam:// deeplinks", with builds for Apple silicon and Intel Macs, Windows and Linux. |
| iPhone, iPad | Roam Mobile | App Store, seller Roam Research Inc. | Free download, iOS 14 or later, version 1.1.17 in the US store. Also runs on Apple silicon Macs. |
| Android | Roam Research | Google Play | Free download, updated 16 April 2026. |
The iPhone and Android listings carry the same Roam Research tagline: "As easy to use as a document. As powerful as a graph database." Listings change, so read this table as a snapshot from 7 October 2026. DayPrivate has no store listing of its own yet, because it is not on any store.
Is Roam free?
What each Roam app costs, with Roam Research's monthly price and DayPrivate's beside it.
Whether Roam is free depends on which Roam you mean. Roam Research is the one with a subscription. These are the plans on Roam's own sign up screen in October 2026, set against DayPrivate's one plan and the free Roam apps from the table above.
| App | Price | What that buys |
|---|---|---|
| Roam Research, monthly | $15 a month | A 31 day trial if you have never had a plan, then billed monthly. The web, desktop and mobile apps all sign in to this account. |
| Roam Research, yearly | $165 a year | The same product, billed yearly. |
| Roam Research, Believer | $500 for five years | Five years paid up front. |
| CBP ROAM | Free | Arrival reporting for eligible travelers entering the US at remote locations. |
| Roam Quill | Free | A travel diary on the device, with no paid features. |
| DayPrivate | $8 a month or $69 a year | A different app: one plan, one person, every Apple device they own. Not on sale yet. |
If Roam Research's price is the reason you searched, DayPrivate's Roam Research alternative page, sorted by why people leave names the free outliners first and says when DayPrivate is the wrong move.
Roam as a task manager
When the Roam Research app has become your to do list, and where DayPrivate comes in.
One result for this search is a thread on Roam Research's own subreddit filed under roam task manager, and another is an Obsidian forum post addressed to "Roam refugees". Both point at the same habit: Roam Research's daily note starts as a journal and fills up with TODOs. Roam can hold a TODO for years without asking about it again, and a graph records what you wrote, not where the hours went.
Every note, linked
Roam Research is good at connecting what you wrote. Two brackets make a link, every link makes a backlink, and the daily note is always waiting.
The hours in the day
Roam Research has no planned time, no tracked time and nothing that compares them. A TODO written on Monday scrolls away with Monday's date.
A clock on the bullets
DayPrivate keeps the outline, with nesting, zoom, mirrors, links and backlinks, then puts the day on an hour grid with a timer on each bullet and one card when a block ends with a MUST still open.
DayPrivate has no daily notes page, no block references, no queries and no graph view, so it does not replace Roam Research for research. It replaces the to do list that grew inside it. How DayPrivate plans a day around your calendar is laid out on the DayPrivate day planner app page, and the grid itself on the time blocking app page.
A DayPrivate block has run out with seventy five minutes of MUSTs still open, so the app asks once: re-block today, tomorrow, or leave it. A real capture from the working DayPrivate build, with fictional work in it.

Straight answers
When DayPrivate is not the Roam app you need.
- You want Roam Research itself. DayPrivate is a different app from a different maker. Use the Roam Research apps listed above.
- You research in a graph. DayPrivate has no graph view, no queries and no block references.
- You have a Roam graph to bring along. DayPrivate has no Roam importer. Pasting moves a page at a time and loses every link.
- You need Windows, Linux, Android or the web. Roam Research runs on all of them. DayPrivate runs on Mac, iPad and iPhone only.
- You want free. DayPrivate costs $8 a month. CBP ROAM and Roam Quill are free, but they do different jobs.
- You want to install something today. DayPrivate is in daily use by its author and not publicly released.
Price
DayPrivate costs eight dollars a month, or sixty nine a year.
DayPrivate is one plan with everything in it, on every device you own, for one person. That is about half of Roam Research's $15 a month, and $69 a year against Roam's $165. If the plan lapses, the last version you paid for keeps working and your outline and exports stay yours. See what the DayPrivate plan includes.

Questions
Roam app questions, answered by DayPrivate.
What is the Roam app?
Usually Roam Research, a note taking app for networked thought made by Roam Research, Inc: daily notes, nested bullets, and links that build backlinks. But at least six other apps share the name, including Roam, a virtual office for teams at ro.am, and CBP ROAM, the US Customs and Border Protection app that pleasure boaters use to report arrival. DayPrivate is not a Roam app. It is a separate outliner and day planner for Mac, iPad and iPhone at $8 a month.
Is Roam free to use?
Roam Research is not free. It has no free tier, only a 31 day trial for anyone who has never had a plan, and the mobile apps are free downloads that sign in to that paid account. CBP ROAM is free on the App Store. Roam Quill, the travel diary on Google Play, says it has no paid features. DayPrivate is not free either: $8 a month or $69 a year.
How much does Roam Research cost per month?
Roam Research costs $15 a month, or $165 a year, and its Believer plan is $500 for five years. Those are the prices on Roam's own sign up screen in October 2026. DayPrivate, a different app for planning the day, is $8 a month or $69 a year.
Is there a Roam Research app for iPhone, Android and desktop?
Yes. On iPhone and iPad it is called Roam Mobile, by Roam Research, Inc, on the App Store. On Android it is listed as Roam Research on Google Play. Roam Research's help pages say the desktop app comes in builds for Mac, Windows and Linux, downloaded from roamresearch.com, and the same graph also opens in a browser. DayPrivate, by contrast, runs on Mac, iPad and iPhone only.
Which Roam app do boaters use to report arrival in the US?
CBP ROAM, published by US Customs and Border Protection. Its App Store listing says it lets pleasure boaters and other eligible travelers who arrive at remote locations report their arrival online, and that it was formerly called OARS. It is free. It has nothing to do with Roam Research or with DayPrivate.
Is DayPrivate a Roam app, and can it open my Roam graph?
No to both. DayPrivate is made by a different company and has no Roam importer, so it reads neither Roam's JSON nor its Markdown export. Pasting an indented block of text into a DayPrivate bullet does build real nesting, so a page at a time can come across by hand, but page links and block references arrive as plain characters.
What does DayPrivate cost, and can I install it today?
DayPrivate is $8 a month or $69 a year, one plan, one person, every Apple device they own. You cannot install it today: the build is in daily use and under active development, but it is not publicly released and not on the App Store. The form on this page is how you hear when it is.
